Wrong-way driver results in a collision – sending 3 to hospital south of Gravenhurst
GRAVENHURST – A North York driver has been charged with dangerous driving after travelling the wrong way on Hwy. 11 and causing a multiple-vehicle collision that sent two women and a child to hospital Saturday morning south of Gravenhurst.
Police say that on October 12, 2013, shortly after 9 a.m. officers from the OPP at Bracebridge responded to a call of a wrong way vehicle travelling southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 11, south of Gravenhurst.
The OPP responded quickly to the calls for assistance. The northbound lanes of Highway 11 were closed.
Three vehicles travelling northbound who observed the wrong way vehicle coming toward them were involved in a collision while attempting to avoid the wrong way vehicle.
The driver of the wrong way vehicle finally pulled off the roadway after realizing they were going the wrong way. It is unclear where the vehicle had first entered the highway in the wrong direction.
Two adult females as well as one child were transported to hospital with minor injuries.
The wrong way driver was arrested at the scene.
Subsequently 47-year-old Zu Gong, of North York, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
He is to appear in a Bracebridge court on November 26, 2013, to answer to the charges.
