Trucker charged with careless driving after transport rig rolls off Hwy. 11 south of Gravenhurst Sunday
GRAVENHURST – A transport driver and his sleeping co-pilot were lucky to escape with minor injuries Sunday noon when their rig failed to negotiate a corner southbound from town, taking out 50-metres of Hwy. 11 guard rail before rolling sideways down a deep embankment.
Recovery crews from Northland Truck Centre and a restoration company were still cleaning up tons of salmon and hauling it away at 2 a.m. Monday morning.
Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the Beaver Creek corner across from Luigi Road at 11:50 a.m., about a half a kilometre south of Beiers’ Road and the Harvey’s restaurant near the District landfill.
Police say the two occupants of the truck were not seriously injured.
The driver of the tractor trailer was charged with careless driving.
Highway 11 southbound remains closed to one lane and will reopen once the cleanup is done and the truck has been pulled from the ditch.
That could be well into the morning.
The dangerous corner has been the site of numerous accidents for years – dating back decades when other trucks have rolled down the same embankment and drivers had to be rescued.
