Pond hockey tournament frozen 4-on-4

GRAVENHURST — The eighth annual pond hockey tournament at Boston Pizza enjoyed near perfect weather here this weekend.

The PDS team not only set up much of the infrastructure at the games - including the hot tent and the equipment warm-up trailer - but they also had a winning team in the tournament.

And it kicked off Friday night with celebrity host Kris King finally getting on the outdoor ice for some action with a group of Toronto Maple Leafs alumni, including Mike Gartner and Mark Osborne.

King is an NHL vice-president and was in charge of the Summit Series outdoor extravaganzas this winter — including the Guinness Record game at Michigan Stadium with 105,000 hockey fans, and the big games in the L.A. Dodgers’ Stadium and Yankee Stadium in New York.

The ‘Pondstar’ ambassador presided over the opening night of the three-day event, which included 75 teams in competitive, rec, women’s and over-35 divisions for the 4-on-4 pond hockey shinny. Games are 30 minutes long, with a five-minute intermission.

Round-robin play continues Saturday to 6 p.m., followed by dinner and a DJ at BP till 9 p.m., and dancing to the band Stones Throw next door at Dock on the Bay.

The playoffs begin at 10 a.m. Sunday with the finals after lunch until 4 p.m. for the ‘North America Cup.’
