Heritage Day highlights some Gravenhurst pioneer families Feb. 15 at Grace & Speed

GRAVENHURST — Family Day may be Monday, but for local historians here, the big day is Saturday Feb. 15, when Heritage Day across Canada is celebrated locally.

heritage oneAt the Muskoka Boat & Heritage Centre (Grace & Speed museum) at MuskokaWharf, Gravenhurst’s Heritage Committee – with help from the Gravenhurst Archives – presents its annual signature event.

Porthole to the Past is its popular presentation highlighting significant municipal events, historical properties and people.

The theme of this their fourth effort is ‘Celebrating Gravenhurst’s Heritage Families.’

Some the town’s most well known names will be represented by family members, as they take 10 or 15 minutes each to reminisce about their roots and their stories about the pioneering men, women and children who help make up the community fabric of the original lumber, boating, manufacturing and tourism town.

Names like Brock, Brown, Clairmont, Clipsham, Mickle, Merkley, Passmore and Schell will be represented by Barry Brock, Ruth (Brown) Graham, Mary (Clairmont) Gauthier, Sarah Clipsham, Gord Durnan (Mickles), Janet Merkley, Jim Passmore and Kerry Schell.

Emcee Cyril Fry will lead them through their conversations and lead a Q&A session.

There will be lots of photos and videos from last year’s conversations.
