Gravenhurst Winter Carnival kicks off Friday night at Wharf with OPP vs. Fire hockey game

GRAVENHURST — Perfect winter weather this weekend means the Gravenhurst Winter Carnival will kick off tonight at 6:45 p.m. at the Muskoka Wharf with the start of three days of winter fun in the sun.

feb 20 photos 14 007 (Small)A Whata drum circle at 7 p.m. will precede a hockey game between the OPP and Gravenhurst Fire Department in the outdoor hockey rink beside the splash pad at the sports and events field.

Next door at the Boston Pizza test your arm strength in the arm wrestling contest from 7-9 p.m.

Or try you hand — er, feet — by snowshoeing under the stars. At 7:15 p.m.

Shuttle buses run all weekend around town. And pick up a brochure for more information or go to the winter carninval website at

Saturday morning, things kick off with pancakes at the Seniors Centre or Lion’s Pavilion at the Wharf, where half the day’s action is. The other half is at the Gull Lake Rotary Park.

feb 20 photos 14 002 (Small)The only thing downtown is the Presbyterian Church chili lunch and ‘build Your Own Ra Ras Rasp Poutine Bar’ at the new Oak and Paddle Restaurant (formerly North restaurant) from 5-8 p.m.

During the day popular events like the doggie dash (9:30 a.m.), the bed races (11:30 a.m.), Rotary nail driving and sawing (1 p.m.) and kids pajama/pizza party (5-7 p.m.) are at the Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre’s Grace & Speed museum.

Over at GullLakeRotaryPark, there’s snowshoe games noon to 3 p.m. and kids can play and slide down the giant snow pile and work on snow sculptures, or take a helicopter ride.

At Gull Lake there’s the ever popular polar bear dip (3 p.m.). Bring your suit.

And the snowmobile radar run takes place at West Gravenhurst all day.

Other events around town include library fun events, wing-eating at Carey’s Pub (3:30-5 p.m. Saturday), Everest Expedition (Saturday) and ‘Surviving Winter’ (Sunday) at Taboo, and tobogganing at Muskoka Bay Club.

Saturday night there’s the big carnival dance at the Terry Fox Auditorium 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Centennial Centre.

Sunday, there’s snow yoga at 11 a.m. at Grace & Speed, Skokie’s Birthday and a magic show start at 11:30 a.m. at Grace & Speed, and the demo derby is at the Severn Bridge Fairgrounds Sunday 1-4 p.m…

Closing ceremonies are 4-6 p.m. at Boston Pizza.
