Busy weekend for police in Huntsville included sledder who hits tree

HUNTSVILLE — Two accidents, two impaired sledders, and a stolen snowmobile kept police here hopping over the weekend.

On Saturday March 8, just after 1:30 p.m., OPP along with Muskoka EMS were called to a snowmobile crash on the trail about 1 km off Beaver Meadow Rd. in Port Sydney.

Erin Johnston, 33, of Port Perry Ontario was driving a 2002 Ski-doo Renegade when she drove off the trail striking a tree.

She was transported to a local hospital by Muskoka EMS with non-life threatening injuries.

Later Saturday, at 7 p.m., Huntsville OPP were on patrol on Highway #117 in Lake of Bays Twp., when the officers observed three snowmobiles travelling on the highway.

As they attempted to stop them to confirm proper paperwork and sobriety of the drivers, the third machine, a 2011 Yamaha Apex, tipped on its side, while the others continued travelling.

They were eventually stopped and police found that one driver, Glen Sabatine, 58, of Lake of Bays Twp. had been drinking.

He was arrested and eventually charged with having more than 80 mgs of alcohol per 100 mltrs of blood and will appear in Ontario court of Justice in Huntsville on March 19 to answer to his charges.

He was also issued a 90 day driver’s licence suspension and his snow machine was impounded for seven days.

Huntsville OPP and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs would like to remind sledders to make smart choices and arrive home safely.

Also Saturday, just after 9:30 a.m. police were notified of a white 1998 F150 pickup truck that had been taken from a business on Hanes Rd. in Huntsville.

The pickup truck was taken sometime between Tuesday March 4 and Friday March 8.

On Sunday March 9, just after 12:30 p.m. police were called about a stolen snow machine taken from a residence on South Fairy Lake Road.

The owner had parked his 2002 Artic Cat 500ZR in his driveway Saturday, and last saw it about 8 p.m.

The keys were in the ignition.

Anyone with any information about these two vehicle thefts is asked to contact Huntsville OPP or Crime Stoppers.

And on Friday at about 5:30 p.m., police and paramedics were called to a motor vehicle rollover on Meadow Park Dr. in Huntsville.

The driver of a maroon and black F150 pickup travelling down Meadow Park Dr. lost control and struck a snowbank, rolling onto its side.

Ryan West, 26, of Huntsville, suffered minor injuries but was found to have been drinking.

As a result, West was arrested and charged with having more than 80 mgs of alcohol per 100 mltrs of blood under the Criminal Code of Canada.

He was also issued a 90-day driver’s licence suspension and had his vehicle impounded for seven days.

West is to appear on March 19th, 2014 in the Ontario Court of Justice in Huntsville to answer to his charges.
