Student summer business grants available up to $3,000 from province

MUSKOKA — It’s that annual time again when students are looking for summer jobs.

And for those who haven’t already lined up work — what about running your own business for the summer?

It can be a great alternative to finding a job, says the Muskoka Small Business Centre in Bracebridge.

And this summer, full time students between the ages of 15 and 29 can bring their business ideas to life with financial support of up to $3,000 from the provincial government, they say in a news release Thursday.

The Ontario government’s Summer Company program is available in Muskoka again this year. Summer Company is designed to provide students with the opportunity to start their own business and develop their entrepreneurial skills with ongoing guidance, practical hands-on coaching, training and mentorship from staff at the Muskoka Small Business Centre as well as other entrepreneurs from the Muskoka business community.

Students in past years have found this program to be a great experience, learning business skills, gaining self-confidence, and coming away with a tremendous sense of accomplishment after having created a viable business from just an idea.  Examples of past student ventures include a theatre company, a sports camp, lawn cutting and painting companies, sewing and alterations, a clothing exchange, photography, and a variety of food companies such as pizza, hot dogs, smoothies, and a chip stand.  The ideas are limited only by the students’ imagination.

Since 2001, Summer Company has helped dozens of students in the Muskoka area, creating jobs, contributing new ideas to the community, and encouraging students to try entrepreneurship as a career option.

Summer Company is a province wide initiative where full-time students between the ages 15 & 29 with a proposal for a new business may apply.  Application is done online, and a business plan and budget must be completed using the templates provided.  Muskoka Small Business Centre will provide assistance with both the business plan and budget, so no prior knowledge is required.  The deadline is May 23, 2014, but space is limited so interested applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible..
