Lake of Bays gets $99,000 from FedNor for youth intern

DORSET — A $99,000 FedNor grant will help Lake of Bays Township “coordinate and host special events and implement initiatives identified in the community’s strategic plan to help foster community and business development and enhance tourism in the region.”

MP Tony Clement, on behalf of Greg Rickford, Minister of Natural Resources and Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor), announced Saturday the investment that will strengthen and grow the tourism industry, attract private sector investment to the area and create youth employment.

The FedNor investment of $99,000 will enable the Township of Lake of Bays to hire a youth intern for a two-year period.

“The Harper Government is proud to invest in priority projects that create jobs, growth and prosperity in the Muskoka region and across Northern Ontario,” said Clement. “Today’s announcement will support tourism, economic development and youth employment in the area, helping to position our region for sustainable, long-term prosperity.”

Mayor Bob Young said: “The Township of Lake of Bays is proud to partner with FedNor and the Government of Canada to provide area youth with the opportunity to live and work in Northern Ontario, while creating a strong economic foundation for our community. The funding announced today will support our ongoing efforts to grow the local economy and promote our community as open for business.”

— Since its inception, FedNor has helped more than 1450 young graduates obtain that crucial first job experience in Northern Ontario, while providing countless local organizations with access to a qualified and talented workforce.

— The funding announced today is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.

— Since 2006, through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, the Harper Government invested more than $308 million in support of 1,500 projects. These investments have created more than 15,000 jobs throughout Northern Ontario.
