Severn River Rowing Club starts season with 8 gold medals at first regattas

SEVERN BRIDGE - The Severn River Rowing Club club is off to another strong start this season with eight gold medals in the first two events of the rowing season.

Rowers attended the Tony Biernacki Sr. Memorial Regatta June 21 and the first Central Ontario Rowing Association (CORA) regatta of the season in Welland, on June 28.

At the Tony Biernacki Sr Memorial regatta, Kathryn Barr McGill won gold in the women’s Masters D single scull event, and later teamed with Diane Barr to win gold in both the women’s Masters D and AA-B double scull events.

The club then captured five gold at the CORA regatta this past weekend, with 3 gold medals earned in the single scull event by Steve Ruttan (Masters Men E), Diane Barr (Masters Women D) and Kathryn Barr McGill (Masters Women C).

Mike Smith and Jeremy Rand added gold in the Masters Men B double scull event while Diane Barr/Kathryn Barr McGill rounded out the medal count with a gold in the Masters Womens D double scull event.

The team will return to Welland July 13 for the Ontario Masters Championships on the International Flatwater course.
