GRAVENHURST — Two people are dead and Transportation Canada officials are trying to determine how a small plane crashed into a ditch along Hwy. 11 here at the Muskoka Airport late Friday afternoon.

Police had the crash scene cordoned off into the evening and overnight awaiting the investigators’ return Saturday morning.

Police at the scene overnight said Transport officials ended their preliminary investigation as dark set in, about 8 p.m.

The crumpled white plane lay just 30 feet from the northbound highway and about 300 metres away from the runway.

A green tarpaulin covered a central part of the plane.

The accident happened about 5 p.m., report police, as weekend commuters were arriving at their Muskoka cottages.

It appears the plane was approaching a landing from the northwest, a normal maneuvre for many airplanes landing at the small airport located at the north end of Gravenhurst next to the Bracebridge border, and next to the Beaver Creek federal prison.

It may have flown right over some vehicles.

Hwy. 118, just north, was also closed, along with Hwy. 11.

Police said Friday night they were not releasing the names of the victims until they had contacted their next of kin.

Lori Stonehouse, who works at the Skyways Restaurant just south of the crash scene, said she was just arriving for her evening shift when she got out of her car and “saw a flash of light” about a kilometre north and she “heard the crash.”

“It’s sad,” she said early Saturday morning.

Stonehouse said police just fully opened the highway, which was closed in both the north and south directions, at 10:30 p.m.
