$2,650 in fines for Carling Township man charged with trapping wolves, coyotes out of season

PARRY SOUND — A Carling Township man has been fined a total of $2,650 for trapping violations.

Mark Crocker pleaded guilty and was fined $2,500 for trapping wolves and coyotes during the closed season and $150 for failing to complete the mandatory season-end harvest report. He also received a one-year trapping suspension.

Court heard that in April 2017, conservation officers conducted an inspection on a registered trap line in Carling Township. Over two days, officers located 125 wolf/coyote snares. The wolf and coyote trapping season for 2017 closed on March 31.

An investigation revealed that Crocker was the only one trapping on the trap line at this time and that he failed to keep the required records associated with the trap line.

The snares were permanently forfeited to the Crown.

Justice of the Peace Neil Burgess heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Parry Sound, on May 16, 2017.

Licensed trappers are reminded that they must complete the mandatory season-end harvest report annually. This report records the total number of animals harvested, pelts sold or shipped to be sold, and pelts retained.

Licensed trappers must also report to the ministry the accidental trapping of a furbearing animal above the licence quota or in the closed season in order to seek authorization to possess and sell the animal.

To report a natural resources violation, call the MNRF TIPS line at 1-877-847-7667 toll-free any time or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours.

You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
