Record attendance expected for Mariposa Folk Festival July 7-9 with Barenaked Ladies, Bruce Cockburn at Tudhope Park in Orillia

ORILLIA The Mariposa Folk Festival is looking for a record year in attendance.

mariposa logo 2017 twoAdvanced sales for the July 7-9 music fest are way up over last year, Chris Hazel, from the Festival’s office in Orillia, said Thursday morning.

The Barenaked Ladies and Bruce Cockburn are two of headlining reasons, he says.

The festival that has regained its international stature is attracting ever more artists and patrons.

An evolving lineup that includes the best in Canadian and U.S. folk and general music genres, is constantly on the hunt for new acts that will bring in larger audiences and expose them to some emerging talents many fans would only get to see with great timing and travel.

This brings them all in on the same weekend, to Orillia.

But “it’s always a balancing act,” Hazel says of the new performers on the bill in recent years that are breaking new ground and bending the rules of the original Mariposa lineup 50 years ago.

“It’s in the eye of the beholder,” says Hazel.

“What is folk? Today’s folk is not the old folk and 30-40 years from now what is folk going to be?”

Come and see the best of the old and new on 13 stages, including a dozen nestled among the trees on the peninsula at Tudhope Park.
