Hallelujah! It’s Orillia’s Mariposa Folk Festival. Lean on Lightfoot and hear Leonard Cohen

ORILLIA — The year was 1961 and the Mariposa Folk Festival was born at Oval Park in Orillia.

Three days of folk-inspired music for every one and every taste.

Three days of folk-inspired music for every one and every taste.

Folk music was approaching its peak in a few years and flower children thronged to the tiny festival that would.

Today, a decade after a brief two years at Annie Williams Park in Bracebridge, Ontario’s premier folk fest is nothing like the original in size and a lot like it in spirit.

Some say the Barenaked Ladies, Friday’s headliner isn’t folk and that Bruce Cockburn is really where it’s at Saturday night.

Make it what you will, but together, they’re Canadian troubadors at their best.

That’s what makes Mariposa Mariposa.

It’s in the country and it’s hip, too.

Three days of music blessed by Gabriel and his band of harp-playing cherubs a skipping stone away from the Mnjikaning casino.

Don't look now ... but Bruce Cockburn but listen for his biting commentary.

First Nations, second nations, third world and more.

Mariposa lets you lean on Gordon Lightfoot and hear Leonard Cohen. Hallelujah!

Tudhope Park might as well be Central Park, it’s all the same sounds.

The roots of Rock Around the Clock are blue grass, and Mariposa has your fill of it at a dozen stages you can stroll by or linger to your heart’s and ear’s content.

Even the Orillia Silver Band will play the native son’s Railroad Trilogy.

And you never know who drops into the main stage for a surprise visit.

Could this be the year that a certain Nobel laureate drives in? Or the legend himself who lives on and on and on … from Chippewa on down.

Last year Rita Coolidge read from her book and told tales out of school.

No matter who in your family young or old sees or hears, they will be delighted by the eclectic light orchestras.
